This Field Report is based on your reading of Howard Becker’s chapters in his book Art Worlds. Be sure to follow standard formatting/citation rules.
Think about Becker’s concepts of “art as collective activity” and “conventions.” Likewise, think of an example, drawn from the world of popular culture, that helps illustrate both concepts. The goal here is for you to investigate a pop culture world and help explain how that world “works” by applying Becker’s insights.
1. What is your example? What “pop world” are you investigating?
2. Describe how it is created/produced through collective activity. Some of the questions you might want to tackle here include: what is the collective nature of the activity? Who are the main players? How do they contribute to the creation of that popular culture example? 500 words or more
3. Describe at least three conventions that govern that collective activity. Your description has to explain how this convention “works” within the pop world you’re describing. 150 words per convention = 450 words total (or more).
