For the purposes of this essay, you will be deciphering, if, and why, people consciously (or subconsciously) ignore the plight of others in life and death situations. Helping someone in need is a basic human instinct that most people learn through socialization at a very early age; yet, according to repeated research, is in direct contrast with how people continually behave. What would be the reason or reasons for this phenomenon? The answer to the question is your thesis.
Guiding questions:
• Could it be out of fear (on different levels?)
• Could it be simply a lack of concern (apathy) for the welfare of others?
• Could it be something else, for example, Bystander Syndrome (Effect)
Remember to focus on the essay prompt and guiding questions to help you construct a complete 3-paragraph literary response. Additionally, to support your thesis, you will need to do some additional research beyond answering the “bystander effect” question you worked on in your group. You will need to independently find at least one other actual event that aligns with your thesis. You must use that example (with MLA citation) in the essay as well.
• Essay must be the standard 3-paragraphs required for literary analysis and must conform to the guidelines for English 111 essay.
• You must create an original title and post MLA heading as required on each page Titles are not placed in quotation marks, nor are they underlined. They are placed in italics.
• Please think carefully and creatively and then select a good hook, one that will entice and engage the reader.
• Your background statements should include part, or all of your research on “bystander effect.”
• Your narrower statement should provide a hint of your thesis so the reader can guess which way your argument will go.
• The essay must be structured in accordance with guidelines set for English 111 in the syllabus and the essay template.
• Your thesis must be the answer to the essay prompt. Without an accurate thesis you will not be able to develop a good argument
• Author’s summary in introduction must conform to the required format for literary essays.
• Use the essay template you were provided if you are not sure you will remember the how to construct the essay.
• Be careful with MLA in-text citations: there will be strict penalties for incorrect citation format. Additionally, there will be deductions for incorrect paragraph construction. That is, paragraphs that do not open with topic sentence, or are missing parts of the required format (including closing sentence)
• Body paragraph must open with a topic sentence, followed by an explanation, example, evidence from text, and at least 6 sentences of analysis before the closing sentence which wraps up the main ideas of the paragraphs.
• Conclusion must not continue to analyze text. They wrap up YOUR major ideas in the essay.
• Papers with obvious plagiarism will receive a failing grade with additional consequences. Please PARAPHRASE information taken from other sources, and if you choose to use a direct quote from an outside source, be sure to correctly cite that source with author’s full name, title of work and page number
