Please answer BOTH questions in essay form. Be specific and detailed by citing scenes
from the films.
Question 1: (50 points)
In the film A Clockwork Orange Stanley Kubrick challenges the notion of Classical
Hollywood Cinema by “tricking” the audience to identify with Alex DeLarge. In this
essay you will explore this topic while answering these questions: What is Self-Reflexive
filmmaking? What film techniques does Kubrick use to help us identify with Alex? How
is the film critical of “the State”, “the Church”, and “the Law”? How is A Clockwork
Orange critical of the “viewer” (you)?
Question 2: (25 points)
This semester we have screened three feature length films, many short films, and series of
clips from the early years of Hollywood. At this point in the semester, What has surprised
you most about the early years of Film? What film has shifted your perspective from
“film entertainment” to “film art”? What film or film technique has been most interesting,
to you, this semester?
Section 3: Citizen Kane Clip and Essay (100 points)
Please screen the clip that is linked below (the link is also in your syllabus under Mrs.
Kane’s Boarding House). Please answer in Essay form citing details from the clip.
