Some mayors are more successful than others and some are even recognized nationally. Mayors provide leadership to the citizens and employers, and they are the face of the city to potential employers, capital projects contractors, bankers, educational institutions, and arts, sports, and entertainment organizations, and tourists. Mayors also represent the city’s mission, goals, values, traditions, and initiative while mayors share governance with a city council.
Do you have a mayor you can recall and what is it that you remember about the mayor?
Mayors are responsible for stewardship over the budget process, including the budget package, and operating results. The city budget approved by the city council includes the mayor’s cover letter reflecting their individual leadership role and style while addressing the public with significant economic, fiscal, and political factors; and strategic priorities and challenges and other highlights that make their city special. In addition, the city budget package also includes:
· The council members names and respective districts
· Affinity identifiers including: the city logo, slogan, emblem, and corporate seal
· A table of contents
· The city government organizational structure
· A list of major employers
· A list of major taxpayers
· Capital projects and enterprise activities such as airports, transportation, and empowerment zones
· Descriptions and history of initiatives
And facts, figures, demographics and and other elements of city life that provide and or utilize resources for the benefit of the city and its surrounding areas. Narratives, graphs, charts, pictures, and spreadsheets help develop reader interest.
What else could be included in the budget package that would help the citizens understand how the city operates ?

As a Public Affairs professor, I am interested in all cities and how they manage. Of special interest to me are:

Although cities are unique and reflected in its own demographics, geopolitical comportment, resources, and challenges, they do have the same mission: to protect and serve their citizens. I believe the Mayors Budget Letter can be a powerful political statement that can provide leadership to help all the competing compelling entities within the city understand the challenges and opportunities inherent in running a city day to day and generation to generation.
