Part A
Please review the Power Point presentation on professional ethics, read chapter 7 from the Brammer text, chapter 3 from Corey, and then review the NOHS Ethical Standards for Human Services Professionals at the following webpage.
http://www.nationalhumanservices.org/ethical-standards-for-hs-professionals
The supplemental materials are found under week 5 content. You will also need to identify ethical codes from your current job if they differ from NOHS. Some of your jobs may require you to follow the American Counseling Association (ACA), American Psychological Association (APA), National Association of Social Workers (NASW), or the National Education Association (NEA). You may either have a hard copy of these, or they can be located online very easily. Due to the generalist nature of our Rehabilitation undergraduate and graduate programs, the NOHS guide is the one with which we are most closely aligned.
In addition to these professional codes of ethics, each of you must also adhere to state and federal laws, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania agency guidelines, and employer policies and procedures. Taken together, it may seem sometimes difficult to dissect potential ethical dilemmas and then ascertain how to best proceed. Linking codes of ethics to real world dilemmas is often an exercise in keeping your bearings in shifting sand. Regardless of which code of ethics is being used, certain universal principles are transdisciplinary and may be found in each: confidentiality, beneficence, autonomy, non-maleficence, and justice (as noted in Power Points). These underlying principles can be viewed as reflecting both a mandatory as well as an aspirational perspective.
Please review the following questions taking care to provide a complete response to each, including any appropriate sub-parts. Please clearly number each of your responses in accordance with the accompanying question.
Question #1: (5 pts)
Sexual improprieties are arguably the most serious of ethical violations. Compare NOHS code with another code of your choice and respond to the following:
A. What similarities and differences in each code address sexual improprieties by helping professionals?
B. How does each address sexual relations with a former client?
Question #2: (5 pts.)
A 17 year old comes to see you for the first time. She appears very depressed. She tells you that on her 18th birthday she plans to commit suicide; she also tells you in great detail why and how she intends to do it. She further says she is telling you this because she does not belong to any church and has no priest or minister, you are the only person she is telling.
A. In light of your professional role as a case manager, and considering the NOHS code of ethics, how would you proceed?
B. Using a second code of ethics that differs from the NOHS approach, how would you proceed?
C. Which do you believe is the better approach and why?
Question #3: (5 pts)
You (counselor role) have been working with a client for three years now and he is graduating from Clarion University in December. His family is hosting a graduation party at this parents’ house and he has invited you. He tells you that he never would have made it through without your steady support.
A. How do you respond according to the NOHS?
B. Discuss the pros and cons of attending the party and then by not attending.
Part B
Question #1 (10 pts.)
Chapter 15 of our text (which we read in week #4) explains the importance of individuals considering the development of his/her own “integrative approach” to therapy while developing your own personal philosophy of counseling. As this process takes time, experience in the field, and much personal reflection, I will refrain from expecting you to construct your philosophy at this juncture.
Rather, after your reflection of our campus-week regarding the variety of intervention techniques/theories as well as the other course materials we have used, I will have you respond to the following:
If you had to select one theory that would serve as your primary theory (one that resonates within you at this point in your career/life/perspectives), which theory would you select and why? Please incorporate a thorough explanation as to why you chose this theory (i.e. values, life experience, perspectives, opinions)–whatever the case may be–what is it about this theory that explains you. If you cannot narrow down to one theory, you can use 2 at the most.
*** Please use “Person Centered as my primary theory of interest ***
