African history essay

In class we have been discussing the colonization of Africa and the cultures of rule that developed. This assignment asks you to use Getz and Clarke’s Abina alongside our other class readings to examine the processes, practices, and implications of European imperialism in Africa.
Directions:
Choose and answer one of the questions below in approximately 1400 words (about 5 pages). Your paper must have a clear topic statement that you will substantiate in the body of the paper by citing course readings. (This will be similar to a thesis, but will likely be too close to a statement of fact to be truly arguable.) You must include evidence from Abina and other course readings as well. Your aim is to show your mastery of course material thus far.
You must cite quotes, paraphrased material, and ideas/arguments drawn from our readings using footnotes or endnotes. See Blackboard for examples of the proper citation for books and articles. Formatting is at your discretion but please use an 11- or 12-point font.
Questions:
1) In what ways did African people attempt to resist European control and to what degree did those different methods succeed? With this question, you should not limit yourself to thinking of violent or physical resistance.
2) Write a paper that identifies the ways in which African people accommodated, assisted, adapted to, and/or worked within colonial regimes.
3) Were colonizers’ actions shaped more by the ideas they brought with them to Africa or by the encounters and experiences they had once in Africa? There is evidence for both sides of this argument. Be sure to address at least one counterexample and argue why that does not negate your conclusion or find a middle ground between these two options.
Tips:
Make sure you have a thesis-like statement and that it is clearly stated in your introduction. While most of these questions call for more descriptive than analytical papers, you still want to be sure you have a clear, cohesive paper.
Be sure not to generalize. You need to be working with specific examples or pieces of evidence that support your central point/argument.
Do not drop quotes in as evidence. You need to put them in context and state why they support your claim. Your audience might read your evidence in a different way than you intend if you don’t explain why it supports your claim.
Do not make sweeping arguments about mankind or history.
Purdue’s Online Writing Lab provides great examples and explanations of common grammatical errors, citations, and crafting a thesis.
