How are justice and vengeance related? Is vengeance ever justified? If so, under what circumstances? Do we need to take vengeance into account if we are composing a theory of justice? Or should it be left aside? How do emotions play into your answer to these questions?

In constructing your argument, you must use Robert Solomon’s article, “Sympathy and Vengeance: The Role of Emotions in Justice,” (refer to his definition of vengeance as part of your argument), Akira Kurosawa’s The Bad Sleep Well, and at least one other philosopher we have read this term (Plato, Aristotle, Epictetus, Aurelius, Man, Nitobé, etc.). You might also want to consider real life examples of vengeance or vigilante justice in composing your response. For instance, how do we understand our fascination with vengeance in films of various genres (e.g., samurai, mafia, action) and in the news media (e.g., Dateline NBC, 48 Hours Mystery)?1) How are justice and vengeance related?
