Argument: Should international students pay higher school fees?

Purpose:
To follow a complete academic research and writing process to communicate a well-formed argument about an issue of personal interest in the form of a research essay. . You will have scheduled work periods for this project, but it will be your job to organize your efforts to meet all deadlines.
Topic guidelines:
The topic you choose must be: controversial, current, considerate. This means it must be an issue that people have strong opinions about and would draw clear lines in a debate. It must be an issue that is relevant to the world we live in and events happening now. It must not be prejudicial, offensive or intolerant.
Process
Decide on an issue that interests you and conduct preliminary research
Formulate your essay question and write a complete thesis- begin brainstorming
Conduct your research tracking all sources used
Outline your essay
Draft your essay- type and edit for clarity
Submit final essay with all rough work
Sources:
You must use a minimum of 3 different sources. You need to include at least 1 source from each of the following categories.
A primary source or document
An academic article from an academic journal, periodical or review
A credible website
All Sources MUST be in English
Success Criteria:
Planning:
ο I have selected the issue that I am most interested in
ο I have completed my research planning handout, with specific dates and ideas about how to go about answering my research question
Thesis Writing:
ο I have successfully answered my research question through my thesis statement
ο My thesis is argumentative and focused
ο I have gotten my thesis approved by my teacher
Research Sources:
ο I have tracked all my sources
ο I have made sure that all sources I am reviewing are credible (authoritative authors), including online sources
ο I have used at least one primary source
ο I have used at least one secondary source
ο I have used at least one print (paper copy) source
Outline:
ο My hook is interesting and attention grabbing
ο My transition connects my hook to my specific topic
ο I have stated my arguments in support of my idea
ο My approved thesis is clearly stated
ο My points are my own ideas, based on research conclusions
ο I have used quotes from my research to support my ideas
ο My conclusion is an inverted version of my introduction
Formal Writing:
ο I have not used any personal pronouns
ο I am consistently using active present tense
ο I am not using contractions (don’t, can’t)
ο I have checked for run on sentences/sentence fragments
ο I have used proper MLA citations
ο I have included all research in my citations and Works Cited Page
ο I have got a peer to edit my ideas for clarity and spelling/grammar
