A carbon footprint is a measure of the impact our activities have on the environment, and in particular climate change. It relates to the amount of greenhouse gases produced in our day-to-day lives through burning fossil fuels for electricity, heating and transportation etc. The carbon footprint is a measurement of all greenhouse gases we individually produce and has units of tons (or kg) of carbon dioxide equivalent.
1. The primary footprint is a measure of our direct emissions of CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels including domestic energy consumption and transportation (e.g. car and plane). We have direct control of these.
2. The secondary footprint is a measure of the indirect CO2 emissions from the whole life cycle of products we use – those associated with their manufacture and eventual breakdown. To put it very simply – the more we buy the more emissions will be caused on our behalf.
Your assignment is to calculate your carbon foot print using the Nature Conservancy Carbon Foot Print Calculator Links to an external site.(links to an external site) then answer the following questions. Click on the blue highlighted link and then answer the questions in the widget to estimate your footprint.
1. What are your estimated emissions? 63 tons
2. Is your carbon footprint larger or smaller than the national average? Smaller
61 tons CO2/year 83 tons CO2/year 27%
Total Footprint Similar Households Better than Average
3. What percentage do you expend for driving, for heating your home? 10%, I work from home
4. What two things can you do to reduce your carbon footprint? Cut beef & diary products and recycle
Please submit this as a short essay, and include a description of how carbon footprints are related to greenhouse gases and climate change.
