Option 2: The economic effects of
inflation have been felt in Washington and
let’s pretend our state legislators are
currently meeting in Olympia to decide
ways to cut the state budget.
Community colleges get nearly all of their
funds from two sources – student tuition
and funding from the State Legislature.
The State Legislature decides how much
funding community colleges receive.
Hypothetically, let’s pretend that state
legislators are going to consider raising
tuition for community college students as a
way to help with the budget. (Again, this is
hypothetical. There were no major
proposals to raise community college
tuition this past year in the Legislature).
The good news is a new interest group has
just been formed – the Washington State
Community College Student Alliance. They
have been given $100,000 by a generous
donor to help the group get started and
they have hired you as their new (unpaid)
Executive Director/Leader.
Your job is to write a plan with four specific
ideas to convince the State
Legislature to not increase tuition for
community college students across
Washington. In other words, what would
be the most effective ways to use that
$100,000 to convince the
Legislature (state representatives and
senators) in Olympia to not increase
tuition? Important hints: You will need to read
Chapter 11 to see some of the ways that
interest groups influence decision-makers
to help develop your ideas and create your
plan. Do not simply give the $ 100,000 back to
students as that would only mean about 18 in Washington.
Do not invest the money because that will
take too long before it grows. Bake sales
and car washes are not worth your time.
You do not need to worry about raising
more money at this time.
Your plan will explain how you can use the
$100,000 to influence the State
Representatives and State Senators in
Olympia. Note: While I want your plan to
be specific, you do not need to tell me how
you will spend every dollar of your budget.
Your plan does not need an intro or
conclusion – just describe each of your four
points separately. I’m looking for about
250-400 words total (or about 65 – 100
words for each of your main ideas).
