The purpose of this assignment is to illuminate how the use of sound play and images in a poem helps to develop a specific theme in the poem. Essentially, you will write a 1,000-word paper (excluding bibliography) to answer the questions:
What is the poem about?
How do the sound and image elements you notice articulate the theme?
Choose one of the poems below:
“To an Athlete Dying Young” by A. E. Housman
“Elegy for Jane” by Theodore Roethke
“Siren Song” by Margaret Atwood
“The Rose Did Caper on Her Cheek” by Emily Dickinson
Note: Do not just make an observation about how poetic elements are used in the poem. In the introduction of your paper, you must make clear what the poem’s theme is. In the body of your paper, you will show how the sound and image elements help get that theme across. For all parts of your argument, support your interpretation with specific textual examples. The ideas you express will reflect what you have learnt from ENG2100, and they will show your unique understanding of the poem.
Write to discover what you believe is the poem’s most significant meaning and the ways in which that meaning is conveyed. Quote or paraphrase the poem, all reference sources to support your thesis, and correctly integrate your quotes. Formulate a Works Cited page and format your paper according to MLA style.
Your papers will be graded on the following factors:
A strong thesis statement with an essay that explores the thesis in its entirety
Grammar and MLA formatting
