PRODUCT TWO: ASSESSMENT PLAN
UNIT 5, 6, 7 & 8
Competency 7, 2, and 5
COMPETENCY 7: Assess Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations and Communities
COMPETENCY 2: Engage Diversity and Difference in Practice
COMPETENCY 5: Engage in Policy Practice
The analysis of the assessment plan and rationale involves a level of detail and insight sufficient to demonstrate proficiency and understanding of the second step (assessment) of the planned change process of the Generalist Intervention Model (GIM) applied to the micro, mezzo, and macro context. The student will describe the planned change process from the point of assessment. After completing an analysis of the assessment process, the student will include a brief description of the bio-psycho-social-spiritual assessment and demonstrate a clear understanding of the need, problem, or situation that will be the focus of the work with the client.
The student will use facts from the case study to describe how assessment is applied to the planned change process in the GIM and how assessment impacts generalist social work practice in the micro, mezzo, macro client system. Know that assessment of planned change is an ongoing process. Students should utilize outside resources and references as appropriate, and include professional interpretations from practice experience, organized as follows:

Step 1: Identify your client
Step 2: Assess the client-in-situation from the following perspectives: (micro, mezzo, macro, and aspects of diversity).
Step 3: Cite information about client problems and needs from the following perspectives: (micro, mezzo, macro, and aspects of diversity).
Step 4: Identify client strengths from the following perspectives: (micro, mezzo, macro, and aspects of diversity).
Step 2a: Assessing from a Micro Practice Perspective
Describe the assessment process, Prompt Competency 7:
Does this case require an individual assessment, a family assessment, or both? Why?
Which problem(s) should you work on?
What are the factors that contribute to the problem?
Prompt Competency 2: Formulate a clear description of the mezzo client system, create a culturagram for the client(s). Attach to the appendix along with your assignment.
Step 2b: Assessing from a Mezzo Practice Perspective
Prompt Competency 2: Formulate a clear description of the mezzo client system, create a culturagram for the client(s). Attach to the appendix along with your assignment.
Step 2c: Assessing from a Macro Practice Perspective in the Urban Context
Prompt Competency 7
What should be considered in a community needs assessment for this case study?
Prompt Competency 5
What are the primary federal policy issues that are evident in this case scenario?
Identify specific social welfare services/programs to serve the client and explain why?
Step 3: Collect, Organize and Interpret Client Data
Social workers use tools to gather and organize client information to arrive at an accurate picture of human behavior and the social environment and the person-in-environment situation: There are at least seven basic “sources of information” about clients (Hepworth et al., 2013, p. 195; Kirst-Ashman, 2018). (1) agency forms and self-assessments. (2) client responses to interview questions. (3) observations of verbal/nonverbal behavior. (4) observations of client interactions with other people. (5) outside sources and referral sources. (6) psychological or other testing. (7) the social worker’s interaction with the client; ‘gut reactions’.
Prompt Competency 7: Construct a detailed [i] genogram and [ii] ecomap to illustrate the relationship between the client(s) and outside systems (attach to the appendix along with your assignment).
Step 4: Assess Client Strengths and Limitations
Strengths can be divided into eight categories: (1) Family and friends. (2) Education and employment background. (3) Problem-solving and decision-making skills. (4). Personal qualities and characteristics. (5). Physical and financial resources. (6). Attitudes and perspectives. (7) Religiosity and spirituality. (8) Miscellaneous other strengths.

Prompt Competency 7: Using the strengths-based model, assess Viola’s strengths; pro or con.
