Fiction Analysis- The Phantom of the Opera

This project asks you to take your developing skills one step further, and turn your ear toward a piece of fiction (literature, film,
television, game) and analyze how it confronts, utilizes, or examines the gendered dimensions of a piece of music, either explicitly or implicitly (or, likely, a little of both). What layers are added as music, fiction, and play meet? How does the passage work? What does your listening biography bring to the workings of the passage and the ways you understand it? Why do you think the author/creator included that passage, and what does it do for the rest of the work? These might act as guiding questions, but you are of course free to pose your own and consider other ones.
The examples you find are likely to engage more than just gender, so you are welcome to discuss more than gender. Do race, sexuality, class play a role? What about narrative? If you’re considering a text work, which words does the author use to describe or imply the sound? So on and so forth…
Guidelines and Format:
Essays should be approximately 2000 words, double-spaced in 12-point font. Ideas or sources that are not your own (or influence your own) should be cited.
