Argument Essay

Assignment: Persuasive writing, also known as the argument essay, utilizes logic and reason to show that one idea is more legitimate than another idea. It attempts to persuade a reader to adopt a certain point of view or to take a particular action. The argument must always use sound reasoning and solid evidence by stating facts, giving logical reasons, using examples, and quoting experts or researched material.
The following criteria is essential to produce an effective argument:
Choose your position. Which side of the issue are you going to write about? Know the purpose of your essay.
Analyze your audience. Decide if your audience agrees with you, is neutral, or disagrees with your position.
What is at stake in your claim? Test your thesis; your argument, must have two sides.
Be well informed about your topic. To add to your knowledge, read about your topic using credible sources.
Find common ground with your opposition.
Respectfully disprove the opposing argument. Understand the opposite viewpoints of your position (their counterargument to your own) and then refute them by providing contrasting evidence or by finding mistakes and inconsistencies in the logic of the opposing argument.
Support your position with reasonable assertions and logic. Use the rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, and logos).
NOTE: THESE ARE GENERAL GUIDELINES. SEE THE ATTACHMENT FOR A FULL EXPLANATION OF YOUR ARGUMENT ESSAY (you will be choosing between writing a definitional, causal or rebuttal argument).
You may also interview friends, co-workers, family members, etc. to assist you with your argument. You can use their opinions to strengthen or refute your assertions.
