PART 1: CHAPTER ESSAY (20 MARKS)
• Read the chapter (please see document part 1 and 2 of the reading “Designs for Living and Learning by Deb Curtis and Margie Carter) carefully and study the many photos.
• Write a brief introductory paragraph which notes the main ideas or purpose of the chapter.
• Briefly write in essay form some of the essential ideas in the chapter. Make sure it includes the following:
o Relationships and a sense of belonging.
o Have a homelike environment.
o How adults and children can feel comfortable in the environment.
o How materials and activities help children feel a sense of belonging.
Include photos from your SCHOOL VISIT (I have included lots of photos for you to pick and choose) of areas that are good examples of the main ideas in the chapter. Use the following questions as guidelines but you might see other things as well. You can include photos from other centres as well.
• What in the space tells children they can play or interact with each other and create more connections? Couches? Hiding places? Small tables or other specific areas where children can explore together in small groups?
• What elements reflect the lives of children and staff and their families? Family portraits? Spaces for families to linger (pre-covid)? Special objects relating to the child’s culture? Something that has been shared by the family.
• What makes this environment soft and cozy?
• What in the environment reaches out to families? Shares information? Shows that they’re included?
• What do you see that tells what is happening in the centre? Look for the documentation of their current inquiries.
THE FINAL PARAGRAPH SHOULD BE YOUR REFLECTION: The following are only suggestions.
• What ideas did you find especially inspiring?
• What have you learned in this chapter that you will use in your work with children?
• Have you seen environments that are less hospitable? How do you think this affects relationships?
This essay should be two or three pages (written), double spaced and include the reference (APA).
***Please add any photos that I’ve included in the upload into the document to prove a point or make an argument stronger.***
