Many people think that once a disaster has passed that all of the hard work is over. As we know, living in South Florida, hurricanes are an ongoing threat to our community. With the knowledge of an impending hurricane, usually shelters are opened to house individuals in high-risk areas, the elderly, and the homeless. Even when a hurricane is one of those that result in little to no devastation, doesn’t mean that it is easy just to close the shelters and go back to normal operations.
Based upon what we have learned in this week’s lessons you are going to address the post-disaster phase as a phasedown of shelter operations has begun, the American Red Cross Disaster Operations Supervisor has directed you to start closing down shelters and to begin re-assigning shelter staff personnel and releasing those that are no longer required. Additionally, the individuals that were in the unaffected high-risk areas can go home, however, may need assistance. Additionally, arraignments have to be made for the transportation of the elderly and some of the homeless individuals do not want to leave as they have nowhere to do.
What NIMS Management Characteristic are you supporting? Discuss the steps and actions you would take to address all of the above issues. Additionally, address any other issues that may arise that I did not list above and how you would address them.
