You must select and focus on a genre that we have studied OR is related to what we have covered (i.e. Hip Hop, Ska, K-Pop, Speed Metal, Glitter Rock, R&B, etc. are all acceptable genres).
1. Explain the background and context of the style. Which style(s) came immediately before this genre? Where did it come from geographically?
2. What influences led to the development of this genre? Usually, new genres develop in reaction to previous styles, such as punk rock developing as a scaled down-response to glam
3. Describe the style in musical terms. What does it sound like? Discuss the key distinguishing musical elements of the genre (i.e. talk about the melodies, harmonies, rhythm, form, instrumentation, etc.). Describe what makes this genre sound different than others.
4. Choose one or two notable, representative artists or groups of the genre. Discuss these artists/groups. You can give an overview of important artists but stay away from the “laundry list” of all artists in this genre.
5. Focus on a few notable albums and songs. If you were giving someone who didn’t know this music a playlist, what would you put on it to help them “get” the music? This does not need to be an exhaustive list, but more of a “best of” type of list.
6. What is particularly compelling to you about this music? Why is this style or performer important to you?
