Leadership Self Reflection

Rationale: The final course paper (2100-2700 words) is an individual written assignment in which students are asked to integrate their learnings from the course as well as their results from the Strengths Finder 2.0 and create a comprehensive guide for themselves of the essentials for successful Ethical Leadership from where they are now and where they will see themselves 5 years in the future.

The paper should include, but not be limited to,

· I.A the most important lessons learned regarding leadership, ethics and organizational responsibility taken from course readings, activities, and mini assignments and explain the reasons these are personally meaningful;

· I.B what you learned about your own leadership behaviors, ethics, values, perspectives, and development from activities throughout the semester; and

· II. how this knowledge and awareness can/will strengthen the ethics, values and morals of your future leadership and organizational effectiveness.

Ideas must be well grounded in theory from the course, the StandOut 2.0 Assessment and other relevant literature. The paper must be written with thoughtful analysis, strong use of references, and accurate use of readings. This is not a diary, it is an analysis of what type of leader you thought you were, what type of leader you aspire to become and what is the plan to get you there. Think of yourself as a case study and use theories and ideas from the course to expand and probe choices, behaviors, outcomes, and implications. Theory enables you to go beyond what you would in regular self-reflection.

PART I ( 1400-1700 words) contains the basics of your leadership guide from an analysis of your course learning and of your individual ethics and leadership.

A. The course has provided a theoretical framework for thinking broadly about ethics and leadership and its components that you can draw-upon to describe your leadership understandings, critical reminders, and ethical philosophy and to explore how all translate into a leadership approach and ethical practices.

a. What are the most important lessons learned regarding leadership, ethics and organizational responsibility taken from course readings, activities, and mini assignments and explain the reasons these are personally meaningful;

B. The course has provided opportunities for you to see yourself:

a. As a leader via group led discussions. What did you learn?

b. What have you learned in class that is a reflection on who you are now? Have you changed and how?

c. Additionally, discuss the results of the StandOut 2.0 Assessment, what have you learned with this tool about yourself.

This section should stretch your knowledge of yourself, test your perceptions of your strengths and areas for development, and be integrated into your analysis throughout the paper.

PART II (700 – 1000 words )builds on PART I. It is a statement of your leadership vision and moral values for the future and the leadership development plan you will need to advance that vision. More specifically, think about yourself 5 years into the future, and create a vision of what you will be like as a leader.

A. If we could see into your vision in action and watch you leading in the future, what would your leadership look like?

B. What, how, why and whom will you create, contribute, impact, and serve as a leader?

C. What skills and strengths will you be best known for?

D. Why would people seek out your specific leadership?

E. What would be different from the strengths, approaches, and moral behaviors that people see today?

Do not describe a specific job or organization. Rather visualize how you will extend and leverage your leadership strengths and values in whatever you are doing 5 years from now.

Again, students are expected to draw widely on the leadership and ethics literature and to reference course readings, case studies and class discussion as well as research other relevant literature for this paper. You should have at least 5 references.
