Module 3 Formal Written Assignment

Note: Per “Methods and Criteria for Evaluation” in the Learning Contract (available under “Course Information” on the Home Page), formal written assignments should be 3-5 pages in length—not including cover pages and references; 1 1/2 – double-spaced; with in-text citations and formal bibliographic references at the end. The longer your paper, the more likely you will have time to cover the material in detail and receive a better grade. The same holds true for the extent to which you tie your analyses directly to the reading and videos, whether using your own words or via quotes and paraphrases.

The three quotes below are associated with Kant’s argument for the necessity of religion. For each quote, clearly and accurately describe what he is contending; analyze why he is doing so, i.e.. what is the context/background/reason for the claim; and discuss whether you find the argument/claim to be flawed or useful. Use these readings as well as insight into Kant from other modules to construct your response.

“The only hope for anyone who believes morality is a worthwhile goal to pursue is to believe in a God who in some way provides us with the assistance we need to overcome our evil disposition.” (Chpt. 32, Evil and the Paradox of Grace, para. 9)
“The solution [to the problem of even good-hearted individuals inevitably corrupting each other] is to form a community for the purpose of encouraging each other to do good. Kant called such a community the ‘ethical commonwealth’. . . [which must] conceive of itself as a ‘People of God’ under divine guidance.'” (Chpt. 33, Community and the Mystery of Worship, para. 3)
“There is only one [true] religion, but there can be faith of several kinds.” (Chpt. 33, Community and the Mystery of Worship, para. 6)
