Long Answer: Worth 50% of the test grade. You can refer to all of the material taught in the course so far. Don’t worry about your essay being too long – that has not been a problem so far.
NO EXTERNAL/UNASSIGNED MATERIALS OR INFORMATION WILL BE ACCEPTED.
Be sure to respond to all parts of the question. You cite your sources if you use a direct quote. Otherwise, citing isn’t required since you are using only assigned materials. This is not a formal essay with an introduction, conclusion, etc. Your goal is to demonstrate that you have:
1. completed the readings;
2. listened to the lectures; and,
3. understood and synthesized the course material so far. Save in double-space so I can read your response more easily.
ques – Discuss, compare and analyze at least six (three per country) significant Indigenous policies/laws from Canada and the US – Muckle calls them “Important Acts of Government” (pg.114). Discuss your chosen policies in relation to Chapters 5 & 6 in the Muckle textbook and to Rosie and Nimkii in This Place. You may relate policies to other chapters in This Place as well but be sure to focus on Nimkii and Rosie. Remember that This Place is set in Canada so the policies in the US do not apply to that book. What are some of most significant policies in the two countries? How have they affected aspects or the totality of the lives of Indigenous peoples – in other words, what makes them significant? Explain. Have the countries borrowed/copied policies from one another, as far as you know or can surmise? Explain. I describe policy changes as a pendulum swing – they go from being anti-Indigenous to pro-Indigenous and back again. Why do you think that happens? Explain.
