Students will submit a response to the readings that are scheduled for Tuesday’s class by Monday at 11:59 pm of each week. The weekly reading responses allows students to do a close-reading of a text that will be discussed in Monday’s class. Students can discuss how the text(s) defines race, class, gender, or specific social conditions such as segregation discrimination, poverty, wealth, etc. To do so, students can focus on motifs, symbols, character development, meanings conveyed, messages, narrative structure, plots, and/or connection between texts or larger social issues. Weekly Responses are 250-300-word double-spaced paper (excluding heading and title of paper). The responses should be used during class to help students participate and engage in the class discussion. Also, the response should follow the MLA formatting style guidelines, which includes the use of quotes, paragraph spacing, and pagination. It should also be headed correctly. However, it does not need a works cited page. *Responses that are less than 250 words or that are late will receive a penalty of no less than half of the points for the assignment. The responses should be posted to eLearn by 11:59 pm on Monday. There will be no make-ups.
Make sure to proofread and edit responses before submitting them!!!
NO POINTS GIVEN FOR RESPONSES WRITTEN ON THE WRONG READINGS. SEE SCHEDULE BEFORE WRITING AND SUBMITTING RESPONSES!!!

Ways to approach writing the weekly responses:
*These are but to examples. You are free to approach it differently as long as it attends to the guidelines set for this assignment.
a)You can start off by stating what you thought about the text (i.e. I found this [title of the text] difficult, interesting, engaging, etc. because [explain why you found the text to be that way].
•Next, you can discuss the theme, its use of symbols, its narrative structure to name a few (i.e. One of the most prominent themes in this [title of the text].
• You should discuss a passage or several passages that you think best demonstrate your observation about the text.
b)You can also approach it by taking about how the text connects to other texts we’ve read in class (i.e. The reading [title] seems to challenge the ideas expressed in the [title or text] we read a week ago.)
•Next, you would want to explain what you mean (i.e. What I mean is that in the [title of the text] it states this [tell what it states]; however, in the [title of the comparison text] it state something else [explain].
•Again, you will need to give specific examples to support your claim.
Things to Avoid!!!
•Writing a summary of the text. I have already read it. I want to read what you think about it.
•Using the second person point of view. Do not use it unless it is in a passage you are quoting.
•Submitting a draft that has not been proofread. Make sure to check for grammar and punctuations.
