Greek philosophy distinguished between the soul and the body, and this distinction has colored much of the interpretation of the New Testament by Christians throughout history. But the Old Testament does not make this distinction. In Genesis God created the body, then breathed in the breath of life, and the combination became the Hebrew term ” nephesh,” often translated as “soul.” Today we use lots of different terms to talk about the aspect of the human that is more than the body: a person’s mind, his soul, his spirit, his will, his desire or lust, his conscience, his inner self, his ego vs. id vs. super-ego, his evolutionary heritage of learned behavior (often brought into discussion when trying to explain or justify sexual behavior), and other terms. Today we often encounter attempts to define the mind as simply the software running the machine of the body. Write a brief essay discussing why you think the simplistic two-fold distinction of body and mind (or soul) is inadequate to describe what it means to be human.
