Students will be asked to take part in a social experiment. Using a social media platform of Instagram,
Twitter, Facebook, or Snapchat find a minimum of 5 people that you do NOT personally know. They can
be of no relation, whether familial, professional, or social. Visit their page to like pictures and positively
compliment their posts. Find positive things to comment under their pictures. Keep a log of the responses,
actions (visits of your page), etc. Screen shot the notable ones and attach to the paper in an Appendix.
There should be at least one image for each individual. In a 2-3 page paper, reflect on this experiment by
using the data from your log. Start with an introduction/thesis statement of the assignment with thoughts,
objections, concerns, etc. Make reference to literature in the field about the effects that social media has
on mental health (provide references). Consider answering the following questions within the paper:
• How did you feel before and after the social experiment?
• Did your feelings change as the weeks progressed and people responded?
• How were your comments received?
• Were you surprised by any responses?
• What are some of the responses of the recipients?
• How does this support or discount what research says about mental health and social media?
