For your final essay, choose ONE of the following topics.
Option 1) Recommend a Text: Choose one, two, or three texts we read this semester and explain why you would recommend them to someone else. This “someone” could be someone you know personally, like a friend or family member, someone you know culturally, like a celebrity, or it could be to your younger self or your future self. You may also choose a group of people such as your fellow nurses or your community (however you define that). Think about what this person/people could get out of the text, and what it might mean to them and perhaps even what their response might be.
Make sure to explain who you are recommending the text(s) to in your introductory paragraph. And if you choose one text make sure you have multiple reasons why you’d recommend it to this person or group. You may choose any texts from the syllabus that interested you except Stephanie Ericsson’s “The Ways We Lie.”
Option 2) Realism vs. Idealism: For this paper, answer the question of whether you believe it is better to be realistic or idealistic when approaching the challenges we face in 2023? Realists–as embodied by Niccolò Machiavelli–believe we must approach the world as it “really is,” even if that means getting ahead by lying, cheating, or other bad behavior. Idealists–as embodied by Plato–believe we should reach for lofty ideals even if we can’t attain them.
Is realism or idealism a better approach to climate change? Political unrest? Misinformation online? You can choose any contemporary challenge or challenges you see fit. For this essay, you must cite both Plato and Machiavelli. You may want to do outside research for this topic, but please make sure to cite your sources.
Option 3) Dystopian Mirrors: If utopias are the ideals our society can aspire to, dystopias are dark reflections of our worst impulses. They expose the lies we tell ourselves. Dystopian works are everywhere in our culture: The Handmaid’s Tale, The Last of Us, The Hunger Games, Black Mirror, etc. Why are dystopias so popular these days? And what do they say about our reality?
For this essay, discusses how “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” by Ursula K. Le Guin and one or two other dystopias of your choosing reflect our current society. In addition to Omelas, you can pick any dystopias you like just make sure to cite them.
With any of these topics, this paper will be graded more on execution and professionalism rather than argument. You should demonstrate understanding of the text(s) you write about, present a clear argument, use correct APA formatting, and proofread your essay. For your final essay, choose ONE of the following topics.
