This is what I want you to do:
Assignment
1. Compose an essay based on your philosophy of education. Apply what you have learned in this class to help support your viewpoint. You will be graded on application of content from this course.
2. Follow the format of a five sentence paragraph (minimum) for each paragraph: topic sentence, three supporting details, concluding sentence. Writing style should be at the level required of juniors in college. Conveying the content in an accurate and concise style that develops each concept is needed. Complex sentences, proper grammar and usage, appropriate punctuation and capitalization are the basics of good writing and should be observed. Use the following sentence starters within each paragraph to create a fully developed paragraph:
I believe…..a statement about what you believe about the topic (learning, content/curriculum, etc). This is like your topic sentence.
By this I mean….. explain and clarify. These are your supporting detailed sentences. A minimum of three sentences is average but more explanation is above average.
I base these assumptions on……(Support from the textbook would be good here in terms of vocabulary, theories, philosophers, etc.). Please do not base your assumptions on experience. This is your concluding sentence.
Each paragraph should be formatted with the exact sentence starters from above.
Providing support
The concluding sentence should include vocabulary, identified theories, or philosophers. Since you learned about it in our textbook, cite the textbook at the end of the sentence. You cannot base your assumptions on “what I learned in the textbook” but be exact.
A good example would be: “I base my assumptions on the Understanding by Design theory introduced by Grant Wiggens. He encourages teachers to engage students and improve their learning environments (Hall, Quinn, & Gollnick, 2020).”
Each paragraph (except for the introduction and conclusion) should have support.
The support has to be from an academic or scholarly source (not experience). The entire textbook is such a source and as a whole has all the support you need, but you have to identify the exact terms, theory, philosopher, etc.
Feel free to use education scholars who come from diverse backgrounds.
This is not a research paper but a narrative about your teaching philosophy. However, as teachers, our opinions are not enough. They must be supported with best practices and sound research from the world of education.
Here is how you do it:
