Write an essay that compares two albums according to one or more of the following criteria: beauty, goodness, and truth. It may help you to think of this essay as your attempt to answer one of these questions: Which of the albums is most beautiful (or contains the most beauty)? Which of the albums displays or inspires the most goodness? Which of the albums is the most truthful (or contains the most truth)?
Everyone will have a different definition of what is beautiful, what can be considered good, or what truths are important, and that’s definitely OK. There is no “right answer” here. You need to clearly and thoughtfully explain your own ideas and criteria, and support your reasons and interpretations with evidence that refers to specific lyrics or musical aspects of the albums and songs. Assume you have a reader who is somewhat familiar with the albums.
STEP 1: Educate Yourself About Your Topic
The broad topic of Essay 2 is “pop and R&B music from the 1990s,” and you’ll be listening to four different albums, as well as reading articles and reviews about each album. You will complete a Listening Log for each album. Three of the albums will be assigned to the entire class, but you’ll also choose an album on your own, do a bit of basic research about the album, find an appropriate source (an article or review), and complete an evaluation of that source. You’ll also need to think about your own aesthetic preferences and criteria for judgment when it comes to beauty, truth, and goodness.
