MIDTERM -Tommy Orange There There

WRITING PROMPT: How does a specific cultural context influence one or two of the main character’s choices, behaviors, and opportunities. Be sure to first clarify the specific cultural context in question. Use specific dialogue and/or scenes that support your claim.

Some examples of strong cultural context forces are religion, gender roles, classism, stereotypes, patriarchy, racism, segregation, political views and so on. Select ONE theme and hone-in with in-depth analysis.

IMPORTANT: This essay is an argument analysis, not a summary. Your discussion is to convince me that specific (cultural) forces are driving the character’ actions or lack thereof.

REQUIRED: Integrate and cite at least 3 quotes from the book, There There to support your claim. Cite it, that means I want to see page numbers, line numbers, and good use of metacommentry when using quotes in your conversation.

To prepare, review Module: Cultural Context

Particulars:

Use 1st person (never 2nd)
5-6 paragraphs (word count varies – quality discussion over quantity of words).
MLA format/heading,12 font, Times New Roman, page numbers, and so on
Integrate a specific scene to support each claim made in each body paragraph. Cite that scene, so I can find it.
Include a Works Cited page as needed.
Edit grammar
800+ meaningful and cohesive words (sentences, paragraphs) 5 paragraphs minimum
Your thesis is a statement, your claim, and a hint at how you plan to support it.
Each body paragraph should discuss only one idea that supports your argument. Integrate one relevant quote or description of what transpired to support your point. Analyze.
If you add a quote, it must not be longer than 2 lines, less quote and more analysis is key and a sign of sophistication.

IMPORTANT: I am not looking for a summary of the play or unfolding of events. I am looking for your in-depth analysis, rationalizing why “things” turned out the way they did… how cultural context plays in the outcome of things.

Additional tips:

Essay structure: Introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The conclusion is not a repeat of the thesis, rather it is a reflective discussion on what you discovered.

Quick tips:

THESIS should be located at end of introduction. UNDERLINE the thesis.

Each body paragraph topic sentence must be clear and specific, pointing to only one idea that supports the thesis, telling the reader what the entire paragraph is about.
