What kinds of beliefs, if any, does a Pyrrhonist retain? Are they sufficient to enable Pyrrhonists to live their scepticism?

Need to write a 2500 word philosophy undergraduate essay about the nature of Pyrrhonist skepticism and its relationship to belief.

The essential reading provided is:
– Sextus Empiricus, Outlines Book I,sections vii, x and xi also sections xxxiii-xxxiv sections xxxiii-xxxiv
– Gisela Striker, ‘Academics versus Pyrrhonists, reconsidered’, in R. Bett (ed.), The Cambridge Companion to Ancient Scepticism (CUP 2010) [esp. useful: her account of the Apraxia issue in the introduction, and her discussion of the Pyrrhonist response in section II]

Some recommended readings are:
– Michael Frede, ‘The sceptic’s beliefs’ (originally published in 1979), reprinted in his Essays in Ancient Philosophy, Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press 1987 (classical statement of a ‘narrow scope’ reading of Pyrrhonian scepticism)

– Benjamin Morison, ‘Sextus Empiricus’ (Stanford Encylopedia of Philosophy) is a helpful introduction to Phyrrhonian scepticism, esp. to the debate over ‘narrow scope’ vs ‘wide scope’ readings. (There is a nice supplement on ‘Interpreting Frede’.)Benjamin Morison, ‘Sextus Empiricus’ (Stanford Encylopedia of Philosophy) is a helpful introduction to Phyrrhonian scepticism, esp. to the debate over ‘narrow scope’ vs ‘wide scope’ readings. (There is a nice supplement on ‘Interpreting Frede’.)

– Jonathan Barnes, ‘The beliefs of a Pyrrhonist’ , in M. Burnyeat & M. Frede (eds.), The original sceptics: a controversy. Indianapolis: Hackett. 1998 [Influential defence of a ‘wide-scope’ reading (which Barnes calls a ‘rustic’ reading).]

– Casey Perin, The Demands of Reason, ch. 3 ‘The Scope of Scepticism’ (defence of a version of a ‘wide-scope’ reading of Pyrrhonian scepticism) and ch. 4 ‘Appearances and Action’ (a discussion of how, under that reading, the sceptic is supposed to be able to engage in any ordinary activities) (OUP 2010)

However, if you have other interesting readings, they are also welcome. The citation style must be Harvard. Word count has to be 2500 with 10% +- margin.

Please find attached the marking criteria.

Thanks
