Instructions:
Research a tradition, custom or practice in someone else’s family
Directions: You will write a 5-page (minimum), APA formatted paper that analyzes your research and compares and contrasts it to the
major themes, issues, and concepts learned in the course, about the
Black experience.
Some questions to consider in your paper:
1. How does this experience compare & contrast to the “typical” Black experience?
2. What are some of the common themes between your research and what you have learned about the Black experience?
3. How do you think your racial identity impacted your ability to complete the project? (For example, if you don’t identify as a Black American, and you researched your family tree, how easy or difficult do you think it that process was in comparison to the typical
Black American’s attempt to do the same?)
Note: This is for an African American Studies Class; this course will build upon this concept of “returning to the source” in order
to understand the present state of the African Diaspora. Emphasis will be placed on the historical, and psychocultural understanding of
people of African descent throughout the Diaspora.
