You are a citizen of the British Empire in the late 19th century and you have recently toured British imperial holdings in Africa or India. Based on your experiences, you have decided to write a letter to the local newspaper expressing your view of British imperialism. Keep in mind that I have not specified what position you hold in society or where in the British Empire you are situated— you could be a British businessman, an aristocrat on holiday, a British soldier, a student from India studying in Great Britain, part of a resistance group that has been forged in light of British occupation, that is your choice. I have also not specified what view you hold of the empire. Depending on the identity you choose for yourself, you might be someone who is aware or very aware of, for example, of the situation in non-British held territories like the Congo. You might opt to compare your view of British imperialism with the way imperialist expansion was being carried out by the French, Leopold II, etc. Use the readings from Rogers, pp. 195-204, 205-212, readings in Palmer and the packet on the Congo to assist you in formulating your letter and argument. Given the nature of the assignment, you are free to use the first person.
