writing style manual. In scientific disciplines, we use American Psychological
2. Use a Association (APA) guidelines. These include: format paper using 1” margins all, Times New Roman font, 12’ pitch, double-spacing, one full indent/tab for new paragraphs, active voice, avoid informal language (no contractions, no superlatives, avoid first person —as dictated by paper parameter), include in-text references (likely in the introduction section and perhaps in the conclusion section). If you are used to MLA or Chicago writing and referencing formats, that is fine to use either of these; however, be consistent throughout the paper. Regardless of writing style, you select, please edit paper and run a grammar check, and spell check. Basic editing functions will highlight common writing errors (one space after all periods, informal language, passive voice, sentence construction, etc.).
3. Graphics, charts, visual displays: Each graphic should have a hader. For example, Chart 1: Week 1 Percentage of Activity by Category. In the text of your paper, you can then refer to that information using an in-text citation (Chart 1). In the text of the paper, you do not need to repeat information from a graphic, simply highlight aspects that are relevant to the discussion. Often you can “play with your computer” to locate how to insert a chart or graphic type. Sometimes using a histogram or bar chart is easier instead of the pie chart.a. b.
