Characters and Themes

Texts: This essay is going to be based off the short story called “The Yellow Wallpaper” (215-229)

Assignment: Analyze how the symbolism in one story we read/watched develops a particular theme. I recommend focusing on 1-2 symbols as the focus of your paper. Then, indicate what theme these symbols help support, which will then give you a strong thesis. For instance, The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind uses color symbolism to teach audiences a valuable lesson. If I choose this as the focus of my paper, then I will select 1-2 colors that symbolize a deeper idea in the film. Somewhere in your paper, you should make a connection to another story or play.

Tips:

* Essays must be in MLA format – typed, double-spaced, 12-point font and with a Works Cited page. If you need more information on how to write the Works Cited page, then visit the link I uploaded on CanvasLinks to an external site.. Essays without a Works Cited will receive up to 5% grade penalty.

* Essays must be between 4-6 pages (4 is the minimum and 6 is the maximum).

* You must use 4 sources in this essay:

The first is your primary source (the story you are focusing on). You should consistently reference this story throughout your essay. Quote from the story at least 3-4 times.
The second is your secondary source (another story, play or film from the sources I assigned to which you’re making a connection in one paragraph). For a full list, see the “Text” section of this assignment sheet. Quote from the secondary source at least 1-2 times.
The third is a web article (a credible newspaper or magazine article) that you have researched and find both relevant and credible. Quote from the web source at least 1-2 times.
The fourth is a scholarly article from a scholarly journal or book (scholars are people with high degrees who publish peer-reviewed articles in their studied field). Quote from the scholarly source at least 1-2 times.
