What is Identity?
Identity is the qualities, beliefs, personality, looks and/or expressions that make a person
–Self-identity is part of psychology… who you are, how you see yourself
–Collective identity is part of sociology… how you identify and how others see you as part of particular groups (i.e., nation, social class, race, culture/sub-culture, ethnicity, gender, employment)
–Attributes of identity can be defined as positive (i.e., helpful or affirming) or negative (i.e., harmful or destructive)
–Identity is fluid; it is not fixed; many factors contribute to forming a person’s identity; these factors can be either common or unique
