This course covers a wide range of concepts and issues related to social justice, advocacy and the role of social workers and social service workers. To demonstrate student understanding of these concepts, students are to complete a research paper that closely examines ideas related to key concepts explored in this course.
Purpose:
The purpose of this research paper is two-fold, it is designed for students to closely examine, and address issues related to social justice, advocacy, and its relationship to social work/social service work. Additionally, this research paper will enable students to strengthen their knowledge and understanding of academic writing, research, and appropriate use of the literature.
Completing this assessment will help students achieve the following learning outcomes
: 1. Identify and examine a specific issue related to social justice and advocacy
2. Examine and evaluate your chosen topic through a critical lens
3. Identify and explore implications for social work practice as it relates to the chosen topic
4. Find and use suitable and relevant research and scholarly evidence to support the issues discussed in the research paper.
1. Students are to complete an 8-to-10-page research paper responding to one of the following questions: a). It is suggested that social work has moved away from its radical roots and now prioritizes micro/clinical practice, leaving macro/advocacy as a marginal subfield of social work. In your research paper, explain the reason for this shift and discuss the impact this has (or will have) on the social work field (if at all).
b) As addressed in this course, there are many issues/concepts related to advocacy, social justice, and the role of social workers/social service workers. Select ONE of the topics covered in this course (i.e. indigenous populations, older adults, animal rights) and discuss:
1. The nature of the issue (i.e. contemporary issues related to your chosen topic)
2. How advocacy/macro efforts are important for your chose topic.
3. Implications for social work practice.
c) There is an emerging interest in internationalizing social work and social work education, making room for concepts like global citizenship, but is it relevant?
Discuss the relationship between global citizenship and social work/social service work and explain in what ways (if at all), global citizenship can enhance social work’s mission to promote social justice.
Details of the Research Paper: 1. The research paper should be a minimum of 8 pages and at maximum of 10 pages in length (this does not include title page and reference page). 2. A good range of academic sources (8 to 10 academic sources)
3. Proper APA usage (i.e., title page, page numbers, in-text citations, reference page). Resources will be provided for support.
