2.the unfinished essay is uploaded, feel free to make changes or edits in the essay and inform me if you would like to change the moderator or alternative theory.
Suggested structure
Introduction 100 words
-what will be discussed
-thesis
Analytical application 350-450 words
-Introduce situation and include details (antecedent conditions for the selected theory to be applied) (strange case where the theory should have predicted the outcome but did not) (100 words)
-Introduce theory (text book definition) (50 words)
-Application of textbook theory to the selected situation (explain how the situation meet the required conditions for the theory to be applied and also explain how the theory could be used to explain some of the behaviours in the situation) (100-150 words)
-Counter argument (explain how the theory fails to predict other outcomes in the selected situation) (100-150 words)
Discussion 300-350 words
-support your arguments from citations of other articles explaining a potential moderator/mediator as to why the theory did not completely explain and predict the selected situation (100-150 words)
-you could also find an alternative theory to support your reasoning as to what the selected theory failed to take account of (100 words)
-attempt to point a gap in the research literature (100 words)
Conclusion 150-200 words
-summarize the message of your analysis (Is there a research gap, how much research is there to support the alternative explanation and is it sufficient, what adjustments should the selected theory take account for (80-100 words)
-synthesise opposing arguments to the theory and infer its meaning to the selected theory (50-70 words)
-form a brief conclusion to the above criteria (20-30 words)
Brief instructions
Students should analyze a recent personal experience from a social psychological perspective by using theories and/or concepts covered in class or in the textbook. (normative social influence)
The experience / event should challenge and allow you to critically analyze the social psychology theories / concepts. You should cite 4-6 English language psychology journal articles as references.
Using your analysis of a “strange, real-life situation,” identify an applicable theory but also a “research gap” (something that wasn’t fully explained by the original theory as described in the textbook), and, by searching for answers in the research literature, argue that either more research is still needed, or that newer research or additional theories provide a better explanation for your situation.
In your paper, you will first identify a “strange, real-life situation”—a situation that you experienced, or that is a current social event you’re very familiar with, where the behavior observed seems to contradict a theory that you’ve learned in Social Psychology.
Analyze the situation according to theory that you have learned in Social Psychology to (a) explain why the theory should have been applicable to the situation, and (b) explain how it does, and does not, explain the behavior in the real-life situation.
Through this analysis, explain how this gives us a new perspective on the theory, or points to a “gap in the literature” (something that should be explored more with new research).
