What we are trying to do in class right now is trace the history of how ideas
about gender and sex developed in the West (Europe and the United States)
over the last few centuries. And, it may be that some of these fanciful European
notions we have read about linger in our culture today, whether we want them
there or not! So, we have read parts of Nature’s Body to help us understand
the history of Western perceptions of differences between people. We have also surveyed some instances of sex/gender from non-Western places and traditions.
For this assignment, present an analytical critique of an aspect of the Western
sex/gender binary. Please focus on just one or a few reverberations of “the
binary” across Western culture, or in other cultures impacted by the West.
Your work may be historical or contemporary. It may focus on a given community, or on a specific region. You may use our non-Western gender/sex expression any of the examples therein, to compare, contrast, or substantiate your points.
No matter what mode of creation and presentation you choose from the options below, you need to employ and cite textual sources.
