For this assignment, students will undertake an in-depth analysis to examine one aspect (theme) of the Indian Residential School System history and the reconciliation process while also implicating the profession of social work, and individual contributions of the student (as a future social worker and member of Canadian society).
Themes & Research Questions
These are some of the major themes that underlie the study of Indian Residential Schools, their legacies, and the renewal process occurring today. Students must select one theme and subsequent research question below as a foundation for their research paper.
1. Colonialism and Post-Colonialism
• How have the beliefs underlying colonialism and its policies impacted Canadian society,
including Indigenous Peoples, and how is decolonization occurring?
Assignment Guidelines:
• The introduction paragraph must include a thesis statement that clearly captures your theme and
research question.
• The research paper must respond specifically to the chosen theme and research question.
Students are encouraged to provide depth and use a critical lens when constructing their paper
(and avoid surface-level thinking/analysis).
• Must clearly identify (using concrete examples) how the social work profession (and practice) can
respond to the chosen theme
• Must identify how the student will respond/engage (using concrete examples) to the chosen
theme in their personal and professional life
• Must include at least 3 of the 4 articles listed below, and 4 additional articles/resources which can
be either course readings or external literature. However, all additional articles/resources used must be from Indigenous authors/community members. The total number of references cannot exceed 7 sources.
