Task: Write a two to three-page paper that explains how Genghis Khan influenced the development of the modern world through his actions as EITHER an administrator OR as a military leader (pick one or the other, not both).
Research: You will need to conduct
research in order to gather evidence that you will use to establish your thesis. You must start researching far in advance of the assignment deadline, as this often takes as much time to accomplish as writing the paper.
• As you conduct research make sure you evaluate source materials, ensuring what you include is from a reputable source and clearly relates to the task.
• Use the library’s search tools and databases to find appropriate sources, such as books and articles from scholarly journals.
• DO NOT use Wikipedia. Doing so will result in an automatic 25% reduction to your score.
Format, Grammar & Style:
• Your paper will include the following:
◦ An introductory paragraph that contains a well-developed thesis.
◦ A paragraph for each of the ideas/evidence you selected, in which you present a clear and logical argument that directly supports your thesis.
◦ A concluding paragraph that provides a summary of evidence and argument.
• Make sure you write complete sentences.
• Paragraphs should contain at least three sentences.
• Avoid making basic/gross grammatical errors, such as:
◦ Incomplete sentences/sentence fragments
◦ Run-on sentences
◦ Verb-subject disagreement
▪ “They was late” should be corrected to “They were late.”
◦ Punctuation errors
▪ Some common errors include missing or misplaced commas and misusing apostrophes (they are not used to indicate something is plural).
• Your writing should be formal in nature and conform to the following style guidelines:
◦ Use active (NOT PASSIVE) voice.
▪ Passive: John F. Kennedy was shot by Lee Harvey Oswald.
▪ Active: Lee Harvey Oswald shot John F. Kennedy.
◦ Do not write in the first or second person (no I, me, we us, etc.).
▪ Even if you’re paper is objective (based on evidence and critical thinking), using first-person injects the possibility of subjectivity (driven by personal bias or agenda).
◦ No contractions (can’t should be can not, isn’t should be is not, etc.).
◦ Do not end sentences with prepositions.
▪ Example: He did not know where he was at. Corrected: He was lost.
• Proofread! Proofread! Proofread!
◦ The BEST way to proofread is to exchange papers with a classmate and read each other’s work. It is far easier for someone else to spot errors.
Citing Sources:
• You MUST provide a citation when your paper includes either a direct quotation or paraphrased information (information provided by a source and put it in your own words).
• If using a direct quote from a source (only one or two brief ones allowed), you need to place quotation marks around the quoted passage and then place the title of the book/article, the author’s last name, and the page number in parentheses at the end of the sentence, followed by the period.
• If citing a website, place the web address in parentheses.
• If you paraphrase, all you need to do is put the page number you are referring to in parentheses at the end of the sentence, followed by the period.
• Examples:
◦ Citing a direct quotation: When Xerxes asked why the Macedonian army always won Alexander replied, “because you suck and I rock” (Some Book, Doe, 16).
◦ Citing paraphrased material: When Xerxes asked why the Macedonian army always won Alexander told him that it was because he was a better commander (Some Article, Doe, 67).
◦ If using a direct quote from a source, place quotation marks around the passage and include a citation.
• If you include direct quotations, make sure they are explained and contextualized and not stand alone “floating” quotations.
• Ensure that punctuation appears inside quotation marks.
• Using multiple and/or long direct quotations will be penalized — only use one or two and ONLY if absolutely necessary. Paraphrasing is almost always the best course of action.
Plagiarism
• Plagiarism occurs when an individual borrows words, ideas, original material, or data from another person, group, or organization without acknowledging the original source of the material. Students are expected to cite sources correctly.
◦ Your paper will be checked for plagiarism by Turnitin when you submit it.

• As stated in the syllabus, committing plagiarism in this course will result in one of the following:
◦ receiving a score of zero on the assignment
◦ being withdrawn and receiving the grade of F for the course
