Yayoi Kusama is a printmaker, painter, sculptor, and installation artist who lives in Japan. She has had numerous international exhibitions and many of her artworks can be seen online. Her work is a combination of contemporary Pop art and traditional Asian art. Kusama’s painting is entitled Cat. Is Kusama’s painting symmetrical or asymmetrical? Describe repetition in her painting. How does Kusama create unity and variety in her painting? Which principle is stronger, unity or variety? Explain why one is stronger. You will write a total of five sentences for Kusama’s painting.
Beatriz Milhazes is a painter and collage artist who was born in Brazil, but she also shows her work internationally. Milhazes is known for the geometry of her images. In an interview with Terry Meyers, she stated, “I think of my work as geometric, yet I can’t put everything into a square or a circle.” Is her painting Sonho Tropical symmetrical or asymmetrical? How does Milhazes achieve balance in Sonho Tropical? Also, describe the emphasis and focal point of the painting. Is there a focal point in her painting, or is her painting afocal? You will write a total of five sentences for Milhazes’ painting.
