1. Compare and contrast feudalism and capitalism as different modes of production. For example, in what ways is feudal serfdom similar to the capitalist wage-system? In what ways are they different? Try to use a surplus approach when addressing these issues.

2. ”The worker becomes all the poorer the more wealth he produces, the more his production increases in power and size. The worker becomes an ever cheaper commodity the more commodities he creates. The devaluation of the world of men is in direct proportion to the increasing value of the world of things.” Discuss this statement of Marx from 1844 in light of the theoretical analysis developed in Capital in 1867.
3. Why is the distinction between labor and labor power so fundamental in Marx’s analysis of the workings of the capitalist mode of production? How does it compare to mainstream/neoclassical accounts of the distribution of income?
4. How does Marx’s theory of commodity fetishism fit into his larger argument about the workings of the capitalist mode of production?
5. Explain in your own words Marx’s dialectical method. With respect to other approaches (rationalism, empiricism, etc), what is similar and different in this way of understanding reality?
