Cold War Hotspots Article

This is a newspaper research project in which you will write a newspaper article about a hotspot in the Cold War, in other words, a specific site where the conflict between the Americans and Soviets played out on the ground and through the interests, of a third nation. You will write a newspaper article that represents either the Soviet, American, or nonaligned country’s point of view in the “hot spot” conflict that you select.

There are nine hotspots. Choose one (1):

Algerian War of Independence (1954-1962)
Afghanistan, 1979-1989
Cambodia
Angola
Nicaragua
Guatemala
Congo
Iran
Hungary
After selecting a hotspot, review the information provided about your event: Hotspot Resources.

Conduct any other research on your selected hotspot so that you can write a thorough article.

An important part of the assignment is to reflect the “spin” that this nation’s newspaper might put on the event, given their concerns during the Cold War.

Your story may be any one of these article formats:

Main story: tells the events from a timeline for the event selected in a chronological order
Eyewitness story: tells the story from the viewpoint of a fictional or real “eyewitness” who saw the events that day.
Background story: gives information that explains why this event is so important or what led up to the event
Editorial: A reaction to the event from the newspaper’s point of view
Keep track of the websites or print sources you find on your own, and include a full citation for all sources on the last page of your article. You may use EasyBib.com to format your works cited page in MLA format.

Submitting your work:

Click on the “Add Submission” button to upload a document. PDF is the required file format (choose ‘export as PDF’ or ‘save as’ from the file menu and change the file format to PDF; from a Google doc. Download as a PDF from the File menu). We cannot open other file formats, e.g., .pages, .heic. Alternatively, you can use the text box on the submission page; you have the ability to create tables, add images, etc., using the formatting tools; click the first button on the menu bar to access them.
