Thus far, you have learned how historical contexts, perspectives, and biases influence the interpretation and “telling” of historical narratives. For this discussion, reflect on what you have learned about your research question and the historical event and current event you chose. To ensure an interesting discussion, you are encouraged to think creatively about your initial posts and extend the points made by your peers. It is also important to review the module resources and read the prompts in their entirety before participating in the discussion. You should include examples and other supporting evidence from the module resources in your posts.

For your initial post, address the following:
Discuss the brainstorming process you used to identify bias in your primary and secondary sources. How did you do it? Describe the strategies that were successful for you. List the primary and secondary sources.
Consider the challenges you encountered identifying the narratives about your historical event. What methods did you use to identify the absent voices in the historical narratives?
What perspectives do you think are missing from the narrative about your historical event?
Be sure to cite evidence from your sources to justify your points.

Response Post # 1
When I am brainstorming, I feel very chaotic. I tend to end up being all over the place but ultimately I narrow down my sources based on how a reading catches my attention and how it makes me feel. I like to read each source in its entirety and make sure they include all necessary information. I was able to identify bias pretty easily because two of my sources are third person factual based readings whereas the other two are first person interviews that clearly hold bias because they contain personal thoughts, feelings, and opinions.
Absent voices can be felt in these sources because there are only a handful of survivors left from this time therefore we are left with much secondhand information. If we had access to more first person accounts, we would be able to analyze the events at a much more personal level. This also goes hand in hand with the missing perspectives. It is hard to understand what really happened without having various accounts from those that experienced. I have one source that does have a first hand account but many more would help to connect all the various pieces of information. Unfortunately, at over 100 years after the fact, this is next to impossible to achieve.

Picking my topic was very easy for me because I have always felt that despite how The Native Americans were treated, forced from their lands and relocated hundreds of miles to places deemed undesirable at the time, people tend to forget or leave them out of the conversation surrounding racial inequality or racial justice. Reading all these stories written during the time of the Wounded Knee Occupation, from several different perspectives, has shown just how divided the country was when it came to equality for the Native Americans. I have a couple sources from the government side of things, written with a definite bias against the Indians and a more forgiving viewpoint on the wrongdoing of the government. On the other hand I have several sources that were at the Occupation, whose first hand viewpoint or personal feeling may have been biased due to The Massacre a Wounded Knee.
I did some research on each source I chose to try and make sure I would be a able to add a viewpoint from each side of the story. I feel I am missing more of the government side of things. As time has passed and the stories are written in a more sympathetic tone in regard to the Indians, the original stance by the authorities has been toned down and made more palatable for todays audience.
