• Amber Case suggests that social media gives us a “second self” that is distinct from who we are our in real life. Other critics have rejected this distinction between “online self” and “real self” as a false opposition. To what extent is our online persona so distinct that it becomes a “second self”?
• Amber Case argues: “it’s not that machines are taking over; it’s that they’re helping us to be more human, helping us to connect with each other.” Are machines making us become more human?
• Blade Runner portrays people as less human than replicants. How does the film depict people’s inhumanity? Are machines making us become less human?
• Blade Runner and The Matrix both present institutions (the Tyrell Corporation and the Machines, respectively) that control individuals. Using one or both of the films, consider to what extent technology supports and/or challenges the control of individuals.
• In Her, Theodore is asked to choose the gender of his OS, and—as it says in the film’s title—he makes it a “her.” Similarly, (the original) Siri, Alexa and Cortana are all female. (In response to criticism, some male options have be developed, but they seem to be more of an afterthought). Why are virtual assistants gendered as female?
