Students will submit a 2000 word (5-6 pages excluding bibliography) research essay. The final essay must be printed in a double-spaced
format (12-pt font), paginated, and with your name, course & professor, a title and a properly cited bibliography.
Essays must have a clear thesis statement to be argued throughout the body of the text. For example (these are not factual, just examples of a clear thesis statement – do not use them):
“The Aird Report ensured Canada would remain a branch of American media in the 20th century”.
Or
“The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council does not hold Canadian broadcasting to account but only serves to strengthen the private
industry”.
Or
“The CBC has surpassed the BBC for delivering news that truly supports the public interest”.
Essays must demonstrate strong research in support of the stated thesis. As such, each essay must include a critical analysis of a
particular development in media and its impact, or potential impact, on Canadian society. You can choose any mass media: from radio to
newspapers or streaming; an historic or contemporary topic.
Your point must be unified throughout and introduced by a clear thesis statement in the first paragraph. The essay should build upon a theme identified in class discussion or in one or more of the articles/works under examination throughout the course; for example: ownership, Canadian content, public broadcasting, media history, the private industry, music…
Please note, media influence is often a popular choice of topic and I discourage it, as it is very difficult to prove.
Students may strengthen and develop their original argument by drawing upon their own experiences, however, as a research paper, the main focus of the essay must demonstrate clear applications of the resources cited. Six (6) scholarly works are required to support your
thesis and must be from a credible source (book chapters, academic articles. Student may also cite other credible sources (news articles, industry reports) but should be wary of things found online if you do not know the source.
All references must be properly and fully cited in a consistent format (APA or Chicago preferred).
