Popular culture figures can have an important historical impact. Sometimes they are valorized for taking a strong stand and sometimes they are repudiated.
For this assignment, I want you to connect one of these figures with his/her historic moment and look for the relevance of the person to the concepts we have discussed. Why is s/he important? What was their contribution and how were they received at the time? How has history remembered the person?
You will need a thesis which means you need to have a good understanding of the person and you will need to spend some time getting to know them. This is not a high school informative essay that moves point by point through the person’s life story. Focus on how they used their platform for social change and how effective they were.
Write a 3-4 page paper that includes research from peer-reviewed library sources. This means that you should use the library rather than Google to find your sources. There are library assistance and History or English tutors who can help you. It should contain relevant biographical information and, more importantly, the cultural implications and impact of the figure and how s/he challenged, and perhaps reinforced, cultural expectations of their time.
