Discussion Reply: RAM Troubleshooting

Having worked in the IT field, I have often watched a shift lead fix this issue. When a client reaches out with their tech having the symptoms listed above, we typically look for the RAM stick to see what is happening. Comparing how the stick presents itself typically indicates how it was installed. We typically run the tech through Systems Windows to see exactly how much RAM is being installed. Unfortunately, I have not gotten to perform this task. Then next, we typically shut off the pc to check the memory sticks. Then it is time to get hands-on. The cover of the PC will need to be removed so the motherboard is exposed so the RAM sticks can be taken out. Now after each stick has been reseated, that should take care of most of the problem, but just to be safe, there are a couple more steps. If the PC is not booting back up, then asses how the sticks are seated now. Take them back out and apply them again. This should allow the PC to come back up. Run the test through Windows Systems once more. Typically at this point, it passed off to someone to repeat all steps to double-check the work. At the point of the diagnosis, whoever has the PC will replace the RAM stick and turn it back on and mess around with the PC for a couple of hours to see if it runs smoothly as it should.
