Language and Names Essay
In class, we are studying words and language. One important aspect of language is names. Each of us has a formal given name, and even perhaps a “nickname,” a less formal name used by family or friends.
For this essay, study the history, origin, and significance of each of your names (first, middle, last, married name, etc.). For each name, find out as much as you can about where the name originated and what it means. (You might start by Googling: What does the name “your name” mean?) For first and middle names, you should also find out why you were given those names, and if you were named after someone.
Now, thoughtfully reflect on your satisfaction with your first and middle names. What do you like about your names? What do you dislike? Has your satisfaction with your names changed over the course of your life? Would you consider passing your name or names on to one of your children?
Lastly, what is your nickname? What is the origin and history of the nickname you have been called? Who gave you the nickname, and why? How much do you like or dislike the nickname? Are only certain people allowed to use your nickname? If you do not have a nickname, what nickname would you choose for yourself? Why would you choose this nickname? Who would be allowed to use it and why?
