When did you become aware that features of your body were different from others’?
How has this assessment of your body changed over time and place? What factors and forces shaped that new outlook?
What practices translate to being more in tune with your body? What sorts of measures, if any, have you taken to alter
your body? Consider body projects such as working out, dieting, plastic surgery, hairstyles, tattoos, and piercings. What
motivated decisions to modify your body? What were the outcomes of your body modification efforts? What does it mean
to be, and to feel, embodied or disembodied? How is the body socially constructed? How doesit become a site of privilege
or oppression; pleasure, joy, ecstasy, trauma, loss, and grief; or contested terrain and struggle when it comes to body
politics, law, and human rights? How do categories assigned to the body like race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality,
weight & height, beauty, ability, and age affect individuals, families, communities, and societies as a whole? Reference
three or more readings from class as you develop your ideas.
You cannot take up every issue that I have posed above; they are there to help you brainstorm. Once you have selected the topics to write about—the questions you seek to entertain—situate your bodily story in the greater context of the course material, i.e., deeply connect and refer to three or more of the assigned readings that have resonated with you. Use the readings that you have selected to think critically about societal messages you have experienced thus far about your body and embodiment and how they have affected your development into a young adult. It is your responsibility to thoughtfully integrate relevant readings to extend your personal narrative. You are required to make connections between your story and the content we are encountering in class texts and discussion. In so doing, you will produce a richer, deeper essay that anchors itself in the personal, but transcends it. You will use your personal story to help you grapple with bigger issues, beyond yourself.
