Instructions:
• Answer five (5) of the six (6) questions listed below. Each question is worth 10 marks
(total 50 marks). Only answer five questions. If you answer all six, only the first five
will be graded.
• Your answer to each question is limited to one page (12 pt. font, double-spaced). One
page with double-spaced lines is about 250 to 350 words. Anything beyond one page per
question will not be graded.
• Put the question number at the top of each page of your answer.
Questions:
1. We have spent a term exploring how leisure is defined, delivered, and practiced. Using
this new understanding, create your own definition of leisure (2 marks). In your
definition, be sure to address what leisure is/means (2 marks); how it differs from other
concepts, like work and play (3 marks); and how you conceptualize leisure satisfaction (3
marks).
2. Provide three examples (3 marks) of what pop culture is beyond media (i.e., not
television, movies, magazines, etc.). Differentiate (2 marks) between “high culture” and
“low culture,” providing an example (1 mark) of each. Identify (4 marks) why this
high-low distinction can be problematic and explain how it is beginning to shift.
3. Write a brief job description for a recreation therapist, including the clients, contexts, and
key modalities in which they will work (4 marks). Explain what is meant by “person-first
language” (1 mark) and explain when it would not be appropriate to use it (1 mark).
Provide an example (2 marks) of a leisure program where persons with disabilities are
segregated and provide an example (2 marks) of a program that is inclusive.
4. Explain (3 marks) three ways that sport can help strengthen communities. Explain (3
marks) three ways that sport can be challenging or controversial in terms of diverse
populations. Define (1 mark) eSports and discuss (3 marks) whether or not you believe
that competitive gamers are athletes.
5. Define tourism in your own words (2 marks). Explain what push factors and pull factors
are (2 marks) and provide an example for each (2 marks). Discuss two positive impacts
of tourism and two negative impacts of tourism (4 marks).
6. In the final module of the term, we explored some of the factors that are likely to impact
our leisure lives in the distant and not-so-distant future. Identify (0.5 marks) whether you
are a Prophet-of-Doom, Utopian, or somewhere in the middle. Define (0.5 marks) the
term you choose and explain (3 marks) why you chose it. Discuss how the COVID-19
pandemic is likely to impact how we understand and engage in leisure (6 marks).
