For your essay, discuss one of the authors below. Focus especially on how the author reflects (and/or challenges) the culture of the author’s era. For instance, one could discuss Winthrop’s “A Modell of Christian Charity” as it reflects Colonialism, or one could discuss Emerson’s “Nature” as it reflects Transcendentalism. Think about what is going on not only in terms of history but also in terms of how ideas are shifting and emerging. In what way does this chosen author/text engage with the idea(s) of the age? Beyond the literary aspect, investigate the text’s role in revealing a part of the American culture and history.
The finished product should be a well-developed essay in which you have practiced the appropriate critical and analytical methodologies in order to establish the strengths (and/or weaknesses) of the work as a literary and cultural expression.
